Ferries in New South Wales

Sydney Harbour and Newcastle on Opal, plus the Pittwater, Brisbane Water and Hawkesbury boats that sit outside the network.

Most of the New South Wales boats on this site start at Circular Quay and belong to Transport for NSW's Opal network: the F1 to Manly, the F2 to Taronga Zoo and the F9 towards Watsons Bay, plus shorter harbour lines to the head of Mosman Bay, round the Neutral Bay loop via Kirribilli and North Sydney, and into Double Bay. On all of them you tap on and off as you would on a bus, and the fare follows a distance band rather than the destination or the hour. Manly Fast Ferry is a private company but now charges the same Opal fare as the F1, while the Captain Cook Cruises crossing between Manly and Watsons Bay stays outside Opal, at a price the operator sets.

Newcastle has an Opal boat of its own: Newcastle Transport's Stockton ferry crosses the harbour in a few minutes, and it is the only ferry on the network where the off-peak fare applies. Further from the harbours the arrangements change. The Palm Beach boats across Pittwater and the Woy Woy ferry on Brisbane Water are small private services, and the second still takes cash or EFTPOS on board until Opal readers arrive. Inland, Transport for NSW runs the Wisemans Ferry crossing of the Hawkesbury around the clock and without charge, as it does every vehicle ferry in the state. Where the official timetables disagree with each other, as they do on several of these routes, the pages print only the times both sources share.
